The Naked Eye

The Naked Eye

A Poem by Shane Hogan Poetry

This is not who I am
nor who I preach to be.
I talk through a vacuum
of a vessel mouth,
Letting former thoughts
cease to be.

Ill walk in my head
and talk with the wind,
My friends will listen by cliffs;
I will observe as the water
erodes some of its face away.
Just a little more gone,
A few stones have fallen away.

Now we venture deeper into winter.
I go to drown beneath my sheets.
I will find heat in all that's frozen.
A knock comes upon my door,
answered to a friend who only smiles.
Imagine a snowflake that is all so different
when so many seem the same.

I like this piece, it has a lot in common with several themes that I personally like to write about. A struggle with either a superficial world, or a superficial self, which at times are hard to distinguish. And that desire to distinguish oneself when at times you feel at though you at just more of the same, but you still want others to see; but their response is empty, and seems to reflect 'more of the same'. I like the snowflake comparison, since although we are told each snowflake is unique; until you look under a magnifying glass, they all just look the same.
