The Celibate Bed

The Celibate Bed

A Poem by Sharon Kinsella
"

About my life.

"

This morning the sun was intense,

Dust motes rose as I walked through my bedroom.

To me, nothing is more beautiful than a well made bed.

My mattress and box springs are new, I bought them four years ago.

I have a French coverlet for the bed with matching shams,

Also I have 600 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets.

I bought these things a little at a time and take good care,

They have to last a long while.

As I straightened and tucked, making sure the top sheet doesn't show

And the pillows are only seen to raise the covered ones in the shams,

I realized that in four years, I haven't had a lover in my bed.

I knew, intellectually that I had sworn off my butches,

Too complicated to have a life where I have to work in tandem,

Or around another soul.

Somehow it still seems kind of sad to have a bed so beautiful,

So sensual to see and touch that has never known intimacy and lust.

Life goes on and so do I.

Perhaps my Celibate Bed will rock me into the next transition in my journey.

Whether shared with another or not, I think you should revel in those 600-thread count Egyptian cotton sheets and treasure that beautiful coverlet and shams. Life is too short to worry about whether or not you have someone else to share it with. Kick up your feet and enjoy it. If someone worthy happens to come along, great; but live like there's no tomorrow.

Your poem comes alive as the room, as a place we have always been before, a mnemonic that evokes contemplation that stretches sorrowfully across all of one's time.

A beautiful kind of melancholy... the lonliness of the perfect bed intertwine well with feelings of wistful resignation. Lovely writing...
