In His Mother's Loving Embrace

In His Mother's Loving Embrace

A Poem by Siddartha Beth Pierce

Lips upon lids

bid you a sweet goodnight

as I turn out the light

then you let out a yelp

'Please, no Mommy-

Leave it on

I am afraid-

Just stay here with me

until I fall asleep,'

are my son's longing words.

How can I not

as these moments will pass

soon he will be a man

the years having gone by

in the blink of an eye.

So I stay with him

scratching his back

singing a tune

to my lad

as his dreams slowly take over

and mine too are answered

with his breath upon my cheek

a blissful moment in time

never to be forgotten

but cherished always

as the love I feel for him

can keep me up all night

as long as he feels safe

in his mother's loving embrace.

What a beautiful, touching poem, Siddartha, and one that so many of us can relate to. My oldest "child" is 39, but I have sixteen year-old whose back I get to scratch every morning when I wake him for school. I've tried to tickle him like I was doing not that long ago, but it doesn't make him giggle anymore. Instead, he snarls and pushes me away. Almost a man, he is--too old for tickling.
I love your poem. Thanks so much for sharing it! Sam

This brought as tear to my eye, very sweet and touching, as a mother's love should be...wonderful.
