The Vitruvian Man

The Vitruvian Man

A Poem by Rachel Cooper

I've only seen you in school books

     But even then

You seem so sad. So stern

Is is cramped in there?

In you're square, or your circle

Of a home?

Did da Vinci draw you with the idea

     Of the ideal human condition?

Do you not like being at your physical peak?

I like to think that at a time you were happy

     But eventually you realized

That you, and you alone

Show us the limitations of every human being.

I have seen so much of this picture. Part of my childhood, in school books, it has introduced "thinking persons TV programmes" in the UK, and seems to be always around even at times in caricature but unmistakable. I have never received so much from it as I just have by reading your poem. Just a few words - many fewer than Leonardo for instance, yet you sum it up wonderfully. Thank you Rachel.

This is a very interesting poem. A very good one as well. Not much to say other than it's a great mixture of observations, thought, and a famous piece of art.
