First in Line

First in Line

A Poem by Merle Van Dee

Don't drink

Don't cuss

Don't be the next drug bust

Yet live a life robust.

Don't try new things

Don't test your faith

Don't learn your boundaries

But make your own path

Walk it alone.

Don't make mistakes

Or poor decisions

And don't you dare fail

Though if you do fall

Make that call.

We'll only punish you

Control your life

Breathe down your neck

Make you look the fool.

So I will play this part

With poison in my veins

Hatred and I am just plain vain.

Curses flowing from my mouth

Wash it out with soap and water

Try and try you just can’t win

(I know you think I'm dim)

But I have seen your ways

Played your games

Burnt by your flames.

So call me your fool

Fix me up to be cool.

I didn't ask to be the way I am

Least I own up to it.

Even if this wasn't the plan.

Alone but happy

Not falsely blessed.

Follow me down if you'd like,

It is warm down here

At the Gates of Hell,

And I am first in line.

I like this, first in line. Gives me the idea of someone who is themself, made by themself, and lives for themself. Not bound to the unreasonable expectations and long list of contradictory advice the world passes down to them, they simply go against the grain because learning new things and finding their own path is made by not being chained by someone else's words. Bit of a ranting style direct to the point that doesn't leave too much to the reader's imagination, but I still enjoyed this. I've always enjoyed a person's self-embrace, and shunning of the uh... how shall we call it, societal bullshit? Yeah, we'll go with that.

Great topic, Merle. I love the dissent that paves the way to the strong final words.

This was a very good poem! Some pharagraphs would make the structure better, but it was really touching!

I looks much better now! It is often the small details that makes all the difference.
