The Bowler Hat Theory

The Bowler Hat Theory

A Poem by Skitsy
"

The Bowler Hat Theory compares a human being to a bowler hat to show how often people make judgments too quickly at first glance and this creates a deluded view on things.

"

The bowler hat lay on the table, a circular shape, a shadow in the light, the interior of the hat is covered in engravings sowed in the soft fabric stating its age and make. The outside has a black ribbon tied around it showing that it is somewhat stylish. Usually, a first glance at this common bowler hat that’s is all that it is, a product, an item of clothing, this bowler hat in fact has been a part of someone’s life, worn many days, thrown down many times, and sat on many different heads.

A human being sat around the table, a slightly built figure with black hair, a shadow in the light, his insides covered with markings and engravings from continuous smoking, stress  and unhealthy eating, on his outside scar, wrinkles and skin colour state his age and race. He wears a black T shirt and black jeans showing that he is quite stylish. Usually, at first glance when you look at this man that’s all that he is, one of the masses, a cog of the labour force, this man in fact has been part of someone’s life,  lived many days, fallen down and got back up many times, met many different people, a fascinating story of his own to tell.

Take more than one glance and you see genuine reality.

I must say what I have to say. it is more like an article than a poem. but let me judge it by its content. I swallowed every word, expression in it, it was really very good, very very. I liked the way you played with words, gave a very meaningful confessions inside the poem. very well done, I hope you find a poetic style to your writings. all in all I liked it and best luck

The Bowler Hat Theory is a well spoken idea based on the old saying "don't judge a book..." This work gives an excellent compare and contrast between a hat and a person, and the deeper meanings of both.

This is especially relevant in today's world, where the idea of "instant gratification" has malformed into a concept of "if I have to put any effort in, it's not worth my time." So many people today won't give more than a glance at anything, and if it causes them to have to think, they run screaming in the opposite direction.

It's refreshing to read something like this, from someone who can see past the surface. It's a marked contrast of my day-to-day life, where I'm surrounded by people who don't want to think, only be entertained.

Very good writing.

thank you :)
The comparison between the two is remarkable and your theory is a very interesting one indeed.

It is very easy to make and pass judgement without knowing someone's or somethings history or background. What you have achieved here is you've allowed the reader to get to know a little more about both subject matters to enable them to make a clearer judgement and to find their own conclusion to your theory. My conclusion is...that I no longer see this poem about a 'Bowler' Hat nor 'A human Being'. What I see is a bowler hat that once belonged to someone and a human being with a past of a life lived!

May I pose a question.... does the bowler hat belong to the human?

Thank you for sharing this thought provoking write..

A good lesson on don't judge a book by its cover, you wrote it in an intriguing way...the bowler hat drew me in, your words kept me interested. Nicely pen'd.
