Closing Argument In closing, Your Honor, Creon is proved innocent by both this undeniable evidence and the answers of the witnesses. Creon was merely doing his duty as king—set in power by the gods; it is upon Antigone, who brashly took it upon herself to break the King’s decree, that all the blame rests. Although Antigone will try to convince you that Creon’s decree is a purposeful and despicable violation of the law of the gods, it cannot be ignored that Antigone—through her suicide—herself broke this divine set of laws that she claims to righteously uphold, as did Haimon and Eurydice, who killed themselves willingly, knowingly breaking the law of the gods against suicide. As for the law of the gods, Your Honor, I must call to your attention once again that Creon himself was following them when events took a turn of out his control—and responsibility. Creon was set in control by the gods’ edict of divine right and is therefore supreme in the kingdom. Antigone—as a woman and a citizen of Creon’s kingdom—is subordinate to Creon. Although Antigone will try to tell you that Creon’s insistence upon his decree that Polynieces not be buried was cruel, it must be said—and said over and over again—that Creon’s duty as a ruler of his kingdom is to be impartial and unyielding in his orders and beliefs, even when it is his own niece who is in guilt. Your Honor, I hope that you will take this complicated case with the utmost consideration and see the innocence of my client, King Creon, in this situation.
