Anthem For The Has-Beens

Anthem For The Has-Beens

A Poem by Somber Eyes

Our words used to be relevant and people used to care
Now, every time we take the stage, I look out, and nobody's there
Sure, there may be a few people hanging out at the bar
But I can't find anyone who still considers us a star
I guess we waited too long, we're too far past our prime
And I'm just another has-been, another victim of time

This is an anthem for the has-beens
We can sit and reminisce and say "Remember when"
I can still remember a time when we were recognized
Now, when we walk down the street, people just pass us by

People used to sing along when our songs were on the radio
And people used to ask for our autographs everywhere we'd go
Before too long, I noticed the numbers were dwindling
And soon enough, those people were few and far between
But, even then, we had a small, but loyal, fan base
Now, every time we play, it seems we're playing to empty space

This is an anthem for the has-beens
We can sit and reminisce and say "Remember when"
When we would take the stage to a screaming legion of fans
But now they've all forgotten, and nobody knows who I am

I still have our first gold record hanging on my wall
And I can still remember the day when I got that call
They said we'd made it big, there was nothing we couldn't do
I was so blinded by success, I believed those words were true
But now, they won't take my call, they won't let me in the studio
I should have known, when you're at the top, there is only one place to go

This is an anthem for the has-beens
The ones the world forget, we never thought it would happen
Who would have thought an overnight success would end up yesterday's news?
I guess we let it go to our heads, because we never thought that we could lose

This is an anthem for the has-beens
Let's all lie back and close our eyes, and we'll remember when
People used to know our names
All the ups and downs of fame
Talking to fans after every show
Telling them what they wanted to know
Seeing new faces every night
And seeing our names up in lights
All those good times that went by so fast
But now, they're all in the past

And I'm left singing this anthem
The anthem for the has-beens
