fireflies

fireflies

A Poem by Marlena

You were all this mass growing

Darkness, like twisted

Angry nights with

No stars to shine for them

And I was supposed to be

Light, like twinkling sounds

And glass and fireflies

Going out and popping up

Somewhere else among

Shadows and things that

Lurked in the dark

No one told me

you were

there, too.

So when your hands reached out

You clutched at my fireflies and

Covered my lips in black

Dirt kisses and hatred

So when I got away I only kept

My shattered winged- fireflies

And broken glass sounds

The dark is so much

Deeper now,

So much darker

Now

They told me

You were

There, too.

Drawn in by the title, left speechless by the turn of darkness and horror, so sad---so terrible---yet so very true.

Profound and fiercely sad.
Friends are nightlights to keep away the dark.
