She Dared To Open The Gate

She Dared To Open The Gate

A Poem by SoulSplatter
"

Revolutionary

"
She had a dream once
of fireflies and big red kites.
Of cotton seeds and bumble bees,
the sunlight bouncing off the trees.

She had a dream once
of people dancing in the rain,
their arms outstretched beyond the chains,
their hearts so full of Love again!
As she believed it was, back then.

For she had seen such selfish schemes
to keep these dreams behind the scenes.
A fairy type tale without a happy end,
a sorcerers illusion that we can't begin to comprehend.

Her eyes fill with tears,
when it's her number they call.
she could not change the story,
there was no hero.
She couldn't save them all.

Head held high, she faces her fate
for it was she who had dared to open the gate.

"What say you, to the charges you face?"
Boomed the judge.

"I am guilty, It was only I who wandered from the cage."

His face begins to change...  "The Cage?"
It's now filled with rage.

"What else would you call this box over which you preside?
What is out there?
What are you trying to hide?"
She cries, so tired of the lies,
knowing the danger
of these words that arise.

"Are you mad child?" His contorted glare takes her by surprise.
"It's not something we hide! It is to keep you safe, from the danger outside!"
and in his eyes is where the fear resides.

"Are you afraid to die?" was her only reply.
..."Of course, aren't we all?!" His voice cracks,
irritation beginning to rise.

"So much, that we are afraid to live?"
She breathes out in sigh.

The room is so deafening,
the Judge's face is reddening.
Her ears start to ring.

And now that they are thinking,
 others voices begin to speak.

"I miss the sun" the first one is mumbling

"I miss the rain" the second, a little louder

"I miss the air!" the third one sings, emotions now at peak!

"Take her away!" commands the judge,
looking like a boiling pot of water.
"She is guilty! She has wished for our slaughter!"

But it was too late!
For again the young girl
had dared to open the ever failing gate.

Like the rushing water
from a damn now broken,
the people flooded the court.
Like a lazy river now awoken,
they have become an ever rushing stream!

It is no longer a dream!

The Officers quickly released the young girl's arms
and the people took her into their hearts.
Nothing could stop them now,
no one would tear them apart.

Together they march from the room
as the judge's voice booms through the hall.
But his words no longer holding meaning,
for in their minds
new words begin to evolve.

They march to the end,
to the enormous metal gate.
The one that has kept them from the world,
the one that has kept them "safe."

"What's out there?" a voice cries.

The young girl smiles
as she thinks of how to reply,
so many things she could tell them,
from what she had seen outside.

She thought of one word that could possibly say everything,
for she didn't want to keep them.
she closed her eyes, slowly opened her mouth
and whispered...

"Freedom."

Engaging read with a message. Get out and live. In our lives we all have gates that we think keep us save, but are they keeping us caged?
