Nearly May

Nearly May

A Poem by Sel Whiteley

They sat with their hands clasped
over tea and Coronation Street
in the Cynon Taff valley.

I heard one whisper, I love you.
The foothills glimpsed
 from the backdoor were deep
with lavender, crickets sang staccato
 in April grass. People gathered.

Years later, we recalled the cider,

Spring garlands and how her face

blushed like May blossom.

we're going to have a lawn party at an old mansion in Lexington on the first of May, going to dress the girls up in their prettiest dresses and decorate a May pole and eat lots of good food, we all need a day of beauty and rest and conversation
