Moments Golden

Moments Golden

A Poem by Richard M
"

Thinking about the growing up disabled, but with my three elder siblings. (Updated, thank you Beccy.)

"

We grew up together a fighting four,

shouting, squabbling, slamming doors,

different ideas and different views,

heads spinning with all our news.

Day to day we were at each other,

a parents worry, especially mother,

a house busy and full of noise

created by two girls, two boys.

Cubby houses and climbing trees,

bumps and bruises, skinning knees,

horses, bikes, billycarts too,

oh, to the childhood that we knew!

School days came you watched out for me,

though not always could you see, but

with your individual brands of love,

strengths I always felt part of.

My three elder siblings we grew so strong,

together melding in a lifetime bond,

years together, a love we know,

binding stronger wherever we go.

All came this from the love of two,

from them we ever learned and grew,

they taught us love and staying close,

the lesson that I loved the most,

such a happy childhood that we had,

there for each other through good and bad,

the strength of four who lived as one

from sunrise, 'til the day was done.

But one by one you went away,

so empty was I in those days, but

phone calls kept us all in touch,

through those years when

  I missed you so much.

Individually we went our ways, but

  always remember nurturing days,

new ideas, directions lead us away, but

in family love we will stay!

Moments special when together again,

though never knowing until when,

to see how the years have changed,

developed us, but love’s refrain.

Those times together are moments golden,

family love forever holding,

this love still binding us wherever we go, and

through the years we will know.

Years go by, how we’ve changed, but

  underneath we’re still the same,

years go and young ones come,

love expanding and thrice the fun,

family ties strong though far apart,

loves connection in beating hearts.

This shows how important family is. And later of course, as we spread our wings, perhaps fly to distant corners, the memories, the love that surrounded us, will always shrink that distance to nothing.

A lovely poem; and having an older sister and two younger brothers, that first verse is just so very evocative of my own childhood.

Beccy.

Nice work Richard, you cant take those childhood memories away but you can hold onto them. I enjoyed the kids perspective as a child myself having no adult problems.

Wonderful poetry shared Richard.
"Those times together are moments golden,

I loved the above line. The good days, we cannot forget. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.

Beautiful poem of sibling love and strong family ties. Loved your voice here Richard. It reminded me so much of my own childhood, I was one of five. May I wish you and yours a wonderful Christmas and all the best for health and happiness in 2020.

Good to know you are safe Richard.
This is absolutely beautiful, Richard. What lovely images you have painted of happy children, playing outdoors, laughing, growing together, sometimes fighting of course but always there for one another. It is so sad to think that we drift as we grow older, but it does seem to be a natural part of life. Siblings must find their own partners, have their own families and move wherever this takes them. I just love how you hold onto the strength of the love that was nourished by your parents. Such a lovely tribute to them.
Laura.
