Walking Away

Walking Away

A Poem by Delilah Dunn
"

Written Fall 2008

"

I want to descend from this place

where nothing is ever the way that it seems

where friends are not friends

but wolves in sheeps' clothing

where fragile hearts do not belong

and lost souls cannot find their way

or return home

I want to awaken from this terrible dream

in which mothers and fathers die

and families fall apart like badly stitched hems

in old hand-me-down clothing

I desperately gasp for air while sinking

longing to reach out and break the glass

Farewell to all the friends who sank

their rusty knives into my back and

opened a crimson flow of heart and memory

I recede within myself and promise

to question the frequency and ease

with which they kill

and destroy others and themselves

as if they were changing underwear

The color of the world that I knew

has become gray and cold

as rain and death and life mingle-

an overdue martini of toxicity

which induces a marked fatigue for

caring what they think or feel

I toss a finger into the air

the only one that speaks alone

and I scream with lungs that may explode with vicious force

all of my goodbyes

That would be a resounding yes-I can feel what you feel. If you walk away, take me with you.
