Chapter 1: I did not know your name

Chapter 1: I did not know your name

A Poem by Steph K
"

Stronger than friendship

"

I lived with you

I breathed your air

I watched you sleep

Your eyes, the dazzling pair

They grey within

The blue engulfed

They froze in perfect

Rainbow laughs

Ice cold pierce

Man eater

You, yeah you

Mad hatter!

Remember me?

I know you do

Because I terribly

miss you too

Look, you see

Your bed next to me,

Food, mood, cigarette soot

Shelf filled with four-inched boots

I was new and scared

Quite possibly, impaired

You held me up

I cleaned your cups.

You. Lazy friend

Crazy friend!

You left some soup

In the pan.

I remember it too

My birthday you

Bought me flowers, cake:

cake filled with choc

Me, that girl you mock

With  your own smile

She picked your socks

Some pile that was!

It reminded me of us

Pile, laundry, dirt!

But without you,

I would not be me.

Because you held me up

You showed me how

I wrote this poem

you knew I would

I remember when

I turned the knob

My new life

Your name I could not pronounce.

Your Russian roots

Suka. Called me that

I was confused and then I knew.

I knew.

The final chapter of this life

Suka, you too!

Part of me, who I am; going to be

Will always see you, remember you.

Because, Ira. I lived with you.

I find this to be an exceptional poem, and I never say that lightly.

The variance in rhythm and texture, as well as the use of rhyme, is captivating.

Have you read any Sylvia Plath poems? This reminds me a bit of her stuff.

The first two stanzas are definitely wonderful. The descriptions are great. My FAVORITE lines are these; "Your eyes, the dazzling pair" and "They froze in perfect/ Rainbow laughs"

This poem is truly great, and I am adding it to my library to read again later. :-)

This is really good, flows brilliantly and that last line was touching, it shows the raw emotion behind the words beforehand.
