Ragnarok

Ragnarok

A Poem by SteveB

RAGNAROK

Who is he that can foretell

what is to be in ages not yet begun,

after the twilight of the Gods

and the awaited dawning of the One.

And on that morning of Ragnarok

when the Rainbow Bridge is stormed

brave Heimdal shall sound his mighty horn

so the army of the heroes might be formed.

Out march the mighty thousands

to battle the forces of the dark.

They form their lines of ghost grey men

and, ‘neath Odin’s watchful eye, surge out to face the mark.

Begins the Gottadamerung

the final earthly war!

For grand Valhalla doomed by fate,

for this they die once more.

Again to feel the thrill of life

to battle Gods and Giants, to meet each deadly stroke

to surround themselves in doomed defense

until, at last, their lines are broke.

As fates decreed in days long past

Asgard, ablaze in final glory, comes crashing down to Earth.

All the Gods and valiant slain slowly pass from life

while Odin through His dying eye sees the star that means rebirth.

Arising from the smoking carnage

as the day of doom is done,

stands a small transfigured child

ready to lead all to meet the One.

This is really well done, I am a big fan of norse mythology and your portrayal of that final battle, Ragnorak, the apocalypse, is really interesting. Love it!

Thank you so much.
Action poetry - I was transported back to the days of reading mythology, making parallels to the Flood in Genesis and the End Times in Revelation (Catholic college - this was a class that I loved). You painted these images to perfection!
