A Peaceful Sleep

A Peaceful Sleep

A Poem by Wulfstan Crumble

I have fallen so far
Deep within unknown depths
Down in swirling darkness
I keep falling, receding.
*
I have become secluded within.
The lights of glass eyes,
Are distant. But, all I see
Is the surreal world outside.
*
Am I trapped within a prison?
My struggles but a mine.
I’m collapsing inside myself.
An ever shrinking virtual cube.
*
I have frozen, leaden, arms,
A limp jaw and dead legs.
Gripped with terror abound.
It constricts around me.
*
My tongue lolls aside,
Distorted sounds drift in,
Shadows pass over.
But, I can’t even blink.
*
Isolation is driving me mad,
I cannot talk or read,
I see the ceiling not TV.
Lights on, lights off, no control.
*
My mind is still whole.
Wit and sarcasm intact,
But the wires are frazzled,
No commands, just sparks.
*
And I turn to you.
Even in my own world,
What, what can you do?
Read to me, read, read, read.
*
Take up books of history,
Letters and stories of loved ones,
Read the Edda and fables of old,
Read all, I shall listen.
*
My gratitude could not be showed,
I’m limp and lifeless,
But, inside I’m all there,
A mind, unfit to rot.

I would be pleased to read to you.

'Then read from the treasured volume
the poems of they choice
and the night shall be filled with music
and the cares that infest the day
shall fold their tents like the Arabs
and steal as silently away."

I haven't read any of your work in a while. It's good to see you around.

I feel the pain and then the comfort here, then pain again. Very touching and pensive!

This is absolutely striking. The perspective that I read this from was my own, as I as feel the emotions from a view of the job in my life. Staying alive. This is a favorite! ~ Jude :-) xo

I read this one outloud to myself. I like the part where you are sitting looking but not at the television as you say, but I think it is through something that has no deep thought yet it has some sort of feeling--aloofness. But Edda brings you back, and she you desire her words, her thoughts, her inner psychness to read you, ----great write Wulfstan! ---mishy xxxoo
