Mother’s Fire

Mother’s Fire

A Poem by Sukriti Joshi
"

The poem is about a daughter who has seen her mother compromise her happiness for her husband. The daughter tries to help her mother but she refuses.

"

I kept asking my mother to let me help

She yelled me not to

I saw the fire in her eyes

The fire that was burning her up

She was not going to let me destroy

The hell she has been living in

She wanted no paradise

My mother taught me to be weak

And to compromise wherever I can

But she didn’t know that

I am not a pet to be caged

Nor a circus animal to be tamed

I was born to be free as a bird

Loud as a lion’s roar

My ambitions strong as an elephant

What I learned about myself as a child was that

I would rather die of cold

Than to embrace the fire

That burned my mother to death

And left only the wife of my father- alive!
