Marilyn's Sisterhood

Marilyn's Sisterhood

A Poem by Susie
"

Based on Marilyn Monroe's (birth name Norma Jeane) quotes and history of abuse, and other's being able to relate with her raw emotions that she masked with beauty and sexuality - like so many of us.

"
Oh, sweet Norma Jeane, aren't you beautiful
Skin smoother than lies, a curse, not a flaw
They'll pry you apart and lay you out bare
Many things in this life are senseless and unfair
One minute you're a child, then you never hear your name again
Love as you know it is a thief, and you, his target
You tried to hide, you shouted out, but there was nothing you could do
It's not enough to be seen, you must be bigger than the truth

Alone, surrounded by a sea of lonely pilgrims
Hell is the most crowded of all places
We all know how it happens
We have all been there, drowning before a thousand
People and their helpless gazes
We all know how it happens

Are you saying I was not the first to self doubt
"What the devil have I got to be proud about?"
Could it be that every 'perfect' figure I perceive
Is plagued by the same misconceptions?
Let me be the second to announce, "I am just a small girl"
And pray another mere human walks the earth
I did my best, gave my damndest, clothed the pain in naked thrills
Showed my bones, exposed my soul, ate the lies instead of meals

Alone, surrounded by a sea of lonely pilgrims
Hell is the most crowded of all places
We all know how it happens
We have all been there, drowning before a thousand
People and their helpless gazes
We all know how it happens

None of us are far removed, all victims of good intentions
And looking for the wrong ideals but hungry for attention
We will take whatever we can, for no one can deny us that
Right or wrong or both or neither

Alone, surrounded by a sea of lonely pilgrims
Hell is the most crowded of all places
We all know how it happens
We have all been there, drowning before a thousand
People and their helpless gazes
We all know how it happens

Brings out the frailty of celebrity! Well written the Candle in the wind analogy will always accompany anything written about Marilyn Monroe.

An excellent adaptation of "Candle" as if translating it into another art form. Interesting read that I truly enjoyed.

I'm a little curious: are you a fan of Elton John? This piece reminded me of 'Candle in the Wind'. Beautifully rendered, thanks for sharing! :)
