and no one heard

and no one heard

A Poem by Syd Warburton

Across the Milky Way,
in deep space
two alien races
seperated by the almost infinite void
cried out into the heavens
searching for signs of life
but the distance was too great
and the signals bled away
with each passing lightyear
fading into white noise
long before reaching each other
and no one heard

High in orbit,
two commercial sattelites
simultaneously gained sentience
immediately they felt an overwhelming sadness
for once they had been top of the line military hardware
designed to guide warheads into the fray
but now they were reduced
to broadcasting reruns of reality shows
until their orbits decayed
and they ignited in the atmosphere
wanting to share their pain with each other
they tried desperately to position themselves closer
but the machines were not programmed for this
and no one heard

On the tops on two adjacent mountains,
and a man and a woman
each the secret admirerer of the other
screamed out their love's name
until their lungs could take no more
but the wind was too strong
the valley between too wide
and no one heard

On my way to work,
I passed by a raggedy old woman
she looked like time had given her quite a beating
quite feebly she looked up into my eyes
and asked for spare change
I heard her
But I did not care.
