The Side of a Hill is Not Ugly

The Side of a Hill is Not Ugly

A Poem by T. F. Rice

The side of a hill is not ugly.

Bony tree fingers and their

pronged shadows

grasp for the last of life,

reach their trusted rootings

in the ever-leaving soil

just enough to walk the line

between risk and safe,

but still think

they’re not letting go.

The earth is ever-moving,

giving and taking, even breaking—

these tiny fractures so unnoticed

in the cycle of life.

The side of a hill is

only

an honest portrayal of

the state of every thing.
