Soldier of Love

Soldier of Love

A Poem by Tiffany K Charles

In '46, a soldier returns
From war, his soul still burns
A veteran of battles fought
His world in shambles, all for naught

He came home, full of pride
His duty fulfilled, he stood beside
His comrades, all so brave
Their sacrifice, a debt we cannot waive

But home is not the same
His love, the flame, now just a name
Gone with the winds of war
Leaving him shattered, hurt, and raw

He walks the streets of Harlem's night
With saxophones, playing their soulful light
Jazz and blues, they fill his heart
With memories of love, now so far apart

His memories are like a mournful tune
Of a love lost, now just a distant boon
But still, he finds solace in the beat
Of jazz and blues, a rhythm so sweet

For in the music, he finds a voice
That speaks to him, and makes his pain rejoice
It's a reminder, of love once known
And of a world that was once his own

So he dances to the rhythm's sway
With hope and faith, in a better day
For he knows his love will live on
Through the notes of jazz, until dawn.
