View From The Rim Of The Earth

View From The Rim Of The Earth

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe
"

Musings at 38000 feet

"

From here;

I can see the wrinkles in her skin.

The Earth is growing old.

From here,

I can see the gashes in her body

The tears running down her face -

The Earth cries from many eyes.

From here;

Earth’s green hairs stand on edge

As if in expectation,

As if in trepidation -

The earth is groaning

Atlas creaks under our weight

Gaia weeps for her children

Who have defiled and poisoned her.

She lies - silent, grim

As stretched as the air is thin

At earth’s rim.

The viewpoint of this poem is almost galactic -- even though it is set on 'the rim of the earth', the viewer must be a giant. Yet, while the perspective makes it seem removed from human concern, the way that you imbue the Earth with human characteristics (using a deft touch of mythology), and have her weeping for us brings the whole back into our realm.

Hey Alvin, your work is truly outstanding. I Like the fact that most of it is universal and I bet thats why it is doing quite well even with foreign sites. I also checked out your profile at Poem Hunter... TMA looks like the code now, huh? :-) Still trying to find my way around here.
