Eros & Thanatos

Eros & Thanatos

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe

Two dogs in your heart

Do battle for your soul -

Two gods war for your mind

For the dominion of your temple;

The two voices that cajole

That implore, and haggle

Are two forces locked

In an everlasting struggle

Let the death drive thrive

And become a black hole -

Or let the light shine bright

And make your life whole

Just look at our history,

All the horrors we beget!

By-products of the strivings

Between Horus and Set

Darkness rules a world

Where men thrive on others’ hurt

And the love has grown cold

In so many people’s hearts…

We wish harm upon our enemies

With our every waking breath

We’ve become vessels of destruction;

Driven by death

We dream only of excess, never considering the next

Generations of our nations who’ll inherit all our mess

All we do is consume, obliterate and excrete

When really the purest pleasure of all is to create;

Eros and Thanatos do battle for your mind

If you love, if you hate, you receive your payment in kind

So let your cold hearts thaw

And be content to live your lives low-key

It was wanting to be Thor

That made a villain out of Loki

Wanting the praise all for himself

Is why the Choirmaster fell

Devote your life to planting seeds

Never give in to your all-consuming greed

Find your joy in fostering life

Don’t be fuel for the death drive…

There are two dogs in your heart

Doing battle for your soul

Two gods, for your mind

Do battle behind your temple

In this universal struggle

You have got to pick a side

Fight beside the sons of darkness

Or join the army of the light

So will you align with the one

And improve yourself?

Or will you side with the other

And consume yourself?

Will you make an effort

To leave behind a better world?

Or will you strike the match

That burns it all down…
