Pearls and Pigs

Pearls and Pigs

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe

You are careless with jewels;
You do not know their worth
You cast in the sewers
The gems of the earth.

I gave you a ruby
It was as bright as the day -
It once adorned your bosom
But you cast it away.

I gave you a diamond,
And you would have it still;
But you are careless with jewels
And pawned it for a thrill.

I gave you a pure pearl
It shone like a star;
But you are careless with jewels,
As all swine are.
