Trust and Lust

Trust and Lust

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe

Promises are such fragile things;
Doomed to be broken.
Feelings deep lightly sleep;
So easily awoken!
By a chance glance,
A passing graze;
A smile, a dance
A word, a phrase...
Sometimes a momentary locking of the eyes
Is as electric as a kiss
The music falling on eager ears belies
The venomous hiss.

And the feeling is seemingly impossible to shake
As uncanny as a haunting
As in the deepest deeps awakes
A lust, a hunger, a wanting...

And in the moment, the attraction is
As compelling as Reason
For trust comes, to the human heart,
As naturally as treason.
