From the Ferry

From the Ferry

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe

We send ripples through the fabric of the ocean as we glide upon it.
We watch the ocean tear and mend itself, melting and remoulding the scar we leave behind
Man is always coming along and disturbing s**t.
We appreciate beauty but seem to think that things are beautiful for our own enjoyment.
It is this same arrogance that leads us to think that we must save the world
Before we destroy it with our greed and our pollution.
Imagine! We, destroy the world!
The earth has been around much longer than us
And survived much greater threats.
I imagine the tick upon the hide of the elephant
Implores his neighbours thus;
"Brothers, drink, but not too deeply, lest we suck our host dry!"
And so with our planet.
Yet it is more likely that when this host we leech upon
Begins to feel our bite too keenly
Will simply rid herself of us
With little more effort
Than that of flicking a tick off her back.
