Fallen Star

Fallen Star

A Poem by Alvin L. Kathembe

You've been there and back again;
Out there where the stars roam.
Their glow is still upon your skin
Moon-face where sun once shone.
But now your revolutions end
And you must turn back home.

You tell wonderful stories
Of marvels and glories,
Of dwarfs and giants, and the most brilliant lights
But to your consternation
This here constellation
Shines nowhere near as bright.

You pulse faintly; there are nebulae
Still woven in your hair
You can barely breathe; you gasp and wheeze -
You were made for rarer air.
You're a diamond in the dirt,
A star upon the earth;
And so much the worse for wear.
