If Only I Would've Stayed

If Only I Would've Stayed

A Poem by Tayauna Hargrove

On the streets of L.A.
Wandering from place to place
Noisy cars
Flashing lights
A mouse in the city of L.A.
If only I would've stayed
If only I would've stayed
I'm turning blue
My stomach is crying
I'm an abandoned pup
There's no way to survive
If only I would've stayed
Stayed in that dysfunctional household
Full of violence and hatred
Aiming guns at each other
Forgetting that blood is thicker than water
If only I would've stayed
Stayed and watch them prey like lions
Hunting each other like vultures
Forgetting that we share the same DNA
Being corrupted and man-eating beasts
Losing their sanity
If only I would've stayed
But I didn't
I don’t regret my decision
They made my nightmares come true
They made everything turn from blue to black
They're hearts are hardened
They're spirits are evil
I had to leave
On the streets of L.A.
With only a dollar in my pocket
Looking for someone to spare some change
Someone with a heart who'll take care of me
Someone who's loving
With a heart of gold
Who wouldn't hurt a fly
Someone who is better than my family
On the streets of L.A.
I'll walk this path alone
Like a bird who's lost his flock
I'll soar until I find my home
Like wounded soldier
I'll fight this fight
No matter what I won't give up
