Hidden Self

Hidden Self

A Poem by Temperance
"

Do we dare look at ourselves honestly?

"

Dark…..dark

          are the hollows of self

Buried deep are….. what?

          What have we secreted there?

Dare we venture into those dark shadows?

Dare we face what is behind the veil?

Are we afraid of seeing?

Do we really want to know?

I don’t think so……..that’s why it is hidden

Some day

We will venture into the depths of self

And……………come face-to-face with

Who we really are

And face the truth

This was inspirational to read. What we might be afraid of now, such as the unknown, we will eventually conquer this fear in the future, one day, That darkness, can't stay dark forever, eventually the sun must come up and clear the confusion and fear that had us scared senseless.

Yes I agree with that, sometimes we must look within ourselves for the answer.
This is so true. The bits and pieces of ourselves that we stuff away and keep hidden even from ourselves until we might be brave enough one day to face them. I love the dark imagery in this poem.

Thank you, Neville! Your review means a lot to me.
This reminds me very much of "Child by Tiger" by Thomas Wolfe....
and the idea of the protagonist, Dick Prosser, who represented that dark side of us...for him it was the evil side, but one that ordinarily does not come out.
this kind of dark is one we face within ourselves, and we must not ignore it or the shadows will get too deep, and overwhelming.
a very thoughtful write here,
j.

Well said! Thank you!
So true, and expressed clearly and forcefully. It is frightening when we writers must confront our inner selves to create our poetry and prose, but necessary for our work to speak truth.
