Waxwing

Waxwing

A Poem by Terathopius

Waxwing

Why do you try, oh Wax-wing

With ceaseless hope in your eye?

You shall never touch the sky,

Nor dance among the clouds,

For you were born upon the ground,

It alone shall be thy home.

What are you doing, oh Wax-wing?

With that terrible tool you wrought?

Won’t you see it is all for naught,

And we both belong down here?

Above, unknown, is a world of fear

In which you will not survive.

How do you fly, oh Wax-wing?

For none can be among the sun,

In the air where eagles soar,

At the footsteps of heaven’s door

Surely, surely, back you’ll crawl

After your inevitable fall.

Where have you gone, oh Wax-wing?

You must be alone in the skies,

Over the rainbows where Elysium lies

Prodigal, what do you gain

Above the snow and rain?

In repentance, you’ll return to me.
