PRETENDING 1955

PRETENDING 1955

A Poem by Terry Collett
"

A BOY AND GIRL IN LONDON IN 1955

"

I'm 7
a young kid
and see her

young Helen
plaited hair
thin wired

spectacles
her large eyes
deep staring

I show her
the toy gun
lifting it

from the dark
brown holster
is it real?

she asks me
not really
only if

you pretend
I tell her
her lips form

an oval
o I see
and she gives

the toy gun
back to me
she shows me

her baby
in a pram
is it real?

I ask her
not really
only if

I pretend
she replies
I don't ask

to hold it
just in case
it lets wee

(pretending)
over me.
