ADVENTURE KID 1951A Poem by Terry CollettA SMALL BOY STAYING WITH HIS AUNTIE IN ARMY BARRACKS IN 1951Auntie had a mutt and its name was Scouter and I was just a small kid but the mutt liked me and we'd go out along the barrack area (my uncle was in the forces) and have our small adventures although Auntie had said don't go where I can't see you but before long we were well out of sight of the balcony vision and the mutt clambered under a gate and I clambered under too but slower and with less skill and once we were on the other side of the gate there was a building so the mutt ran ahead and I followed and it jumped up at this window so I did too and peered in and there were these soldiers facing a blackboard with writing on it and a sergeant was at the front showing them something then he saw me and bellowed for me to stop so I ran with the Scouter to the gate and the mutt got under quick and away but I couldn't get out so quick and this sergeant and another soldier came running along and said what you doing here kid? who do you belong to? I'm Benny and I'm staying with my aunt my uncle's in Korea fighting I said they looked at me ok kid off you go and they opened the gate and I was off like a greyhound out of the traps and Scouter was there waiting and we ran off together and did I tell Auntie? no never no never. © 2015 Terry Collett |
