PALE AS A GHOST

PALE AS A GHOST

A Poem by Terry Collett
"

A MAN AND A WOMAN AND HER HUSBAND AND SEXUALITY

"

You and I could
she said
and that way she had
of saying that

and o that
black silky dress
and her blonde hair
drove me to despair

and I wanted to
o yes wanted to
but I knew her hubby
would have been onto it

as he was most things
and he was not one
to let things slide
and one of us would have

been for it or maybe died
but she certainly had
that thing about her
and Johnny

she said
you and I should have met
years before
but we didn't

and so there it was
o that black silky dress
and I had to imagine
what she wore beneath

if anything at all
(once she said
she went the whole day
and to work with none at all)

look Jeannie
I said
I got to go
if your hubby

sees me here
he's going to put
one and one together
and come up

with us f*****g
and that is not good
she put on her
sad puppy face

and her blue eyes
sucked me up
and she said
just the once huh?

us you and me?
on the sofa or in bed?
then there  was a key
in the door

and we walked apart
she to the kitchen
I to the window
looking out

and her hubby came in
and said
hey Johnny
how you doing?

I've come about that job
you offered me
the other night
(he offered me a post

in his department
to keep me sweet
about some dame
he was screwing)

o yes
he said
sure no problem
the job's yours

where's Jeannie?
in the kitchen
getting me a coffee
I’ve just come

he smiled and winked
and sat down
and talked of something
about the post

and Jeannie came in
with a coffee
wide eyed
and pale as a ghost.
