JOHNNY'S SHOP.

JOHNNY'S SHOP.

A Poem by Terry Collett
"

A MAN GOES SHOPPING AT A SUPERSTORE AND MEETS A WOMAN BY ACCIDENT.

"

Johnny stopped at the cereal aisle
and took down the Cornflakes
looked at the packet and price
and ingredients

reminded him as a kid
shaking the box
and seeing if there
was a free gift inside
that time he got a small submarine
red it was
about two inches long or so

yes but not now
just Cornflakes and words
and health advice and such

the dame stopped by him
looking at the Puffed Wheat
staring at the packet

looking for a toy?
He said

what?
She said gazing at him

we used to have toys
in these packs year ago
he said
I had a submarine once

she looked at him
did you?
She said

yes a red one
he replied
looking at her eyes
and her features
she was about his age
maybe a bit younger
or older he couldn't decide

I had a small car
a yellow one
she said
well it was my brother's
but I stole it
she said

naughty
Johnny said

yes I guess so
she said
looking at him
smiling oddly

I don't have the submarine anymore
he said
must be what 60 years ago now
he added

she nodded
yes I guess it must
but I don't feel my age
she said

you don't look it either
he said

why thank you
she said going red
neither do you
she added
must go my husband
will wonder where
I've got to
she said
musing on Johnny
his jeans and tee shirt
the grey hair
the hazel eyes
she walked off

Johnny watched her go
her 60 plus hips
waving him goodbye
in bright blue jeans
and knitted top
and he smiled
and got on with his shop.
