After The Cinema With Sophia 1969

After The Cinema With Sophia 1969

A Poem by Terry Collett

After going to the cinema

Sophia said to go back

To her place for coffee.

Won't Your parents mind?

I asked.

They'll Be out

She said

Some Polish reunion thing.

I wasn’t keen

But agreed

just to keep her happy

And off my back.

When we got to her parents’ place

She took me to the kitchen

And put on the kettle.

Coffee or tea?

She asked.

Coffee please

I said.

She put spoonfuls of coffee

Into two mugs.

Afterwards

we could go to my room

And make out

She said.

What if your parents return?

I said.

They won’t be home

In quite a while

She said smiling.

After making the coffees

We stood on the kitchen

Sipping the drinks.

Then we heard the front door open

And her parents came home.

Her father a short stocky man

Like a mafia boss

Came into the kitchen.

Who’s this?

He said to Sophia

Ignoring me.

It’s Benny

We work together

She said

Smiling at me .

I sipped the coffee

Gazing at him

Not at her.

Bring no one home

He said

Without my permission

He went off to the lounge

And I gulped the coffee

Which had cooled down

In the time between.

Best go I guess

She said

See you at work Monday.

I put down the mug

And kissing her offered cheek

She let me out

The back door.

I went out into the dim-lit street

Not looking back towards the house

Feeling like a hunted mouse.
