VERMONT 1941.

VERMONT 1941.

A Poem by Terry Collett
"

A WOMAN HER THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS AS SHE PREPARES FOR A SHOW IN RUTLAND VERMONT IN 1941,

"

The show must go on,
Johnny says, despite
You feeling as you

Do about Max and
Him being in the
Army and the war

And such. But you don’t
Give a darn about
The show or how things

Will go and all that
Stuff, which Johnny thinks
Important and you

Don’t and just because
His marriage is rock
Solid and his wife

Can sit on her butt
All day waiting for
Him to come home with

That red lipped smile of
Hers, don’t mean that you
Can feel and think the

Same about Max while
He’s away. The old
Adage: while the cat’s

Away the mice will
Play, rings true in your
Mind and you know that

Once Max is off the
Scene fighting in some
Foreign place, you are

Going to need, yes,
Need, male company,
Need and want it like

A baby needs milk,
Like your dear daddy
Needed his smooth booze.

The show needs you, Sue,
Needs your voice and your
Dancing routine, needs

You to make it go,
Johnny says in that
Whining voice of his,

That get under your
Skin, tone of voice. You
Stand and watch. Feeling

Nothing much, wanting
For the whole s**t show
Circus to be long

Forgotten, to be
Over with, to be
One defunct boring

Episode in your
Life. The sky is clear.
The day is set. You

Allow the thoughts and
Sights to swim about
Your head. Johnny gets

Himself busy; the
Rest of the folks are
At it too, doing

Their little bits, their
Small parts. God bless their
Little happiness,
Their small human hearts.
