SAN DIEGO 1943.

A Poem by Terry Collett
"

A WOMAN IN SAN DIEGO IN 1943.

"

You walk childless in
San Diego; you
Travel light. Who was

That man you saw last
Night? He spoke of stars,
Moon and other false

Promises. Always
The same. The hot meal,
The cinema and

Then home to his bed.
Only he didn’t
And it was all done

After the boring
Film and the long walk
Back. Mother said men

Weren’t to be trusted.
She should have known she
Married the loser

Of all losers. There
Is a wind at your
Back; it disturbs your

Hair, pushes you hard
Forward. If only
Life could be stopped and

Relived better. You
Want nothing more than
To be loved and loved

Well. Stella, Mother
Said, expect nothing
Other than death and

Taxes and the last
Breath and the last thought
Before all goes dark

In the flick of a
Finger. You muse on
That walking childless

In San Diego,
Walking through lonely
And walking solo.
