On My Mind

On My Mind

A Poem by TheAdventOf

I hate to admit

That you’re always on my mind

Like headlights in the rearview

At three o’ clock in the morning

That I just can’t seem to shake…

Fear, but at the same time

The need to know:

Who’s the driver,

And where have they been,

And has it been so hard,

And are they even feeling

The same curiosity

And impersonal companionship

In that brief eye contact

Before we speed off

And never cross each other’s mind again.

I hate to admit

That you’re always on my mind

When I know I’m not on yours.

Yep, I think we all know that feeling. It sucks. Nice work.

Nice poem. Good metaphors, and a very nice write.

I liked the tone of this poem. The longing for this lingering, temporary and nearly insignificant memory is so well thought out and well written. You can hear the curiosity and the desperation in the speaker's voice. It also feels like more than an insignificant connection of the eye. Something about the wording makes me imagine that it was more like a brief sexual encounter in an impersonal location. I loved the car analogy, it feels both physical and metaphorical at the same time. Well done with this poem.
