Extraterrestrial Thoughts

Extraterrestrial Thoughts

A Poem by Falling Leaf.

Sleep is for the dead, and the uncurious,
So my eyes of course feel pasted wide open.
There are two things I am brutally aware of:
My heartbeat,
And how small it sounds.

This fleeting thought in my head is just one
Among billions I will have in my lifetime,
And I am just one mind, one mere cluster of billions of thoughts
Among this human population,
Among these billions who will ever live, and have lived.

This planet, holding these billions of clusters of billions of thoughts
Is just one planet among billions in this galaxy.

This galaxy, with these billions of planets,
Hosting billions of clusters of billions of thoughts,
Is just one in this universe--

Point made. We are small.
Infinitesimal.

The universe is a storybook
Thousands of pages long,
And here we stand upon the first word.
Tis a staircase ascending beyond the heavens,
And look at our feet, on the ground step.

How can we waste our lives thinking
Of naught but ourselves,
When there is a sprawling and unfathomable darkness
Just above our heads?

How can we gossip, sneer, prune our egos like mindless robots as
Blushing nebulae unfurl on the far side of the clouds?

Has our supposed intelligence really blessed us,
Or are we doomed with this cursed self-awareness?

Are dreamers like me on the verge of a breakthrough,
Or are we just fools who can't take our eyes
Off of the stars?

Beautiful! Truly. Every moment is happening all at once, all around the world. It's wonderful to think about. Thinking about how our minds are all processing visual information, sound, smells and touch and even our entire history leaves me in awe. The world is so complex yet fits together perfectly!

Very good mind barf. I liked the thoughts in the poem. You left the reader with something to think about.
"Are dreamers like me on the verge of a breakthrough,
Or are we just fools who can't take our eyes
Off of the stars? "
I believe we must know hope and dreams. Or we become just more cattle walking toward the slaughter house. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.

You flatter me, thank you, Dan. :)
much more than a barf here...this makes such sense...we are so self-enthralled, so full of ourselves, and what are we but a miniscule particle in the whole scheme of things...we are really small except in our own little world of ego--then we are kings and queens of kingdoms.

but stevie nicks sang it well.."rulers make bad lovers, so you better put your kingdom up for sale.

nicely done

Some profound perceptions and several incisive questions.
Nicely turned phrases, stark imagery--poetry, well done.
Very fine work, Falling leaf!

First impressions are the most important. :) Thank you!
no wonder you couldn't sleep ;) what did you eat or drink that evening :)) i love your thoughts and ramblings .. full of all kinds of good stuff says i! we are so small ; with enough mysteries to last everyone's lifetime eh!? i believe it was Buddha (the most revered monk in his discipline) said he had in his whole lifetime taken maybe two steps of thousands .. whew!

aaaaaaaaaaaaaa .. would you send me some? ;)
This speaks volumes of truths.
There are billions of us, yet we are somehow all uniquely ourselves.
I like it. I like all the galaxies you speak of and how tiny we are.
but some of us are still dreamers.
