The Curse Of The Night Owl

The Curse Of The Night Owl

A Poem by Deron Alexis

The Curse

Of

The Night Owl

The midnight air drives coldly

And now my rest must end

And I’m called to see such beauty

The night and dark and fog

And moonlight with the night-sounds

It’s only magic if you can stay awake

But what if you have no choice?

The night is a new dimension

That screens me from the world

Steeps me in gloom

When all I have is night

And day is when I sleep

Violet orchids and red roses

Get to share their bloom

But my wingspan goes on forever

Without reaching another

Is there no one like me?

Forsaken and nocturnal

With whom I can share

My point of view

And my envy for the sleeping,

A brother in the nigh watch

Or maybe a fair owlstress

Who shares my love

for the silver moon

I would give her the grand tour

Show her the world at rest

Through mists and fogs

And moon lit clouds

I would tuck her hair

Behind her ears

And tell her that she’s beautiful

Adorn her hair with fallen stars

Even her feathers

Would be precious to me

Have you ever gotten lost

In an owl’s brown bleak stare?

Seen the moon in our gaze

I would like to have another

To know what that is like

To share my beautiful nocturnal curse

With someone else who cannot sleep
