THE PARK

THE PARK

A Story by Tina Kline
"

A vampire tale.

“Well, I’ll be!” exclaimed Tamara. Then she giggled.

“You sound like some kind of hick.” said Brenda, a smirk on her face.

    “Well, I ain’t!”

    “Well, why’d you say that?”

“Look!” Tamara pointed across the park. They were sitting beside each other on a scarred up picnic table.

The park was mostly green lawn with several picnic tables scattered about, wooden benches placed at intervals on a paved path that snaked its way through the park. Small flowering trees dotted the park and a play area that had a few older kids hovering around it at the moment.

Several people were fast walking on the path, no doubt trying to lose weight. One person was casually strolling along with a little dog on a leash.

Brenda looked in the direction Tamara was pointing. “You shouldn’t point!” She hissed.

“Well?” said Tamara dropping her hand to the picnic table.

Brenda did look and notice. A tall, thin woman with long shadowy hair was watching them. She was dressed in black jeans, black long sleeve T-shirt and thigh high black boots that the jeans were tucked into. She stood there in a casual pose, just watching them. She looked to be a lot younger than Tamara and Brenda who were in their forties.

“Why she watching us like that?” wondered Tamara. “It’s creepy.”

“It is. Maybe she’s a lesbian.”

Tamara laughed. “Even if she was why would she be interested in us? We don’t look anorexic and 18 something.”

Brenda snorted. “Wait! Look! She’s coming toward us!”

    “Jeez!”

Both Tamara and Brenda suddenly felt really uncomfortable and more than a little alarmed. The tall thin woman was striding across the green grass toward them. It was evening and the lowering sun added an air of mystery and danger to the woman.

“We should go.” said Tamara. “We don’t need to wait for her to get here.”

    Brenda didn’t answer.

Tamara took her eyes off the approaching woman and looked at her friend. Brenda seemed froze, almost as if she were under a spell. Feeling a surge of irritation Tamara slugged her in the upper arm.  Brenda’s body moved with the sudden impact but that didn’t change her appearance. She still looked like she was under a spell.

Tamara got up off the bench of the picnic table. She turned to face the tall thin woman who was almost to them. The woman was smiling as she came up to the picnic table.

“Hello.” She greeted in a friendly voice.

Tamara didn’t feel at all friendly. She was concerned for her friend who was just sitting there staring at the woman and looking utterly dumb.

“What do you want?” Tamara asked in a frosty tone of voice.

The woman laughed, a lovely bell like sound. “Not friendly at all, are we?”

“I have no reason to be.”

“I’m Catlin.” said the woman. “I know who you two are. Tamara and Brenda.” She looked down at Brenda and smiled. “She’s Brenda.”

This really alarmed Tamara. She shook Brenda. “Come on Brenda. Time for us to leave.”

She got no response from her friend. Tamara turned angry eyes on Catlin. “What have you done to her?”

Catlin laughed, a fluttery sound this time. “What makes you think I did anything to her?”

“She was fine until she saw you.”

“Well.” Catlin came around the picnic table and sat beside the unresponsive Brenda. “Let me see if I can do anything to…wake her up.”

Tamara made an outraged sound and moved to come to Brenda’s defense. But she wasn’t fast enough. Catlin pulled Brenda into her arms and put her face to Brenda’s throat and inhaled deeply.

“What are you doing!” screamed Tamara.

“Taking what I want.” answered Catlin as she licked Brenda’s neck.

Brenda took a deep, shuddering breath and tilted her head back, exposing her throat.

Catlin pulled Brenda closer then kissed her neck and stuck her tongue into her ear several times, swirling it in little circles.

“S**t!” hissed Tamara. She pushed at Catlin but couldn’t budge her. “You freak! Get away from my friend!”

Catlin laughed, a seductive sound. She cupped one of Brenda’s breasts and rubbed the n****e erect with her thumb.

Tamara couldn’t believe it when she heard a deep moan of desire coming from Brenda. She stepped back in horror.

Catlin flashed her a brief grin then opened her mouth, exposing fangs. She settled her face at Brenda’s throat and bit, sinking her fangs deeply.  Brenda shivered and groaned in obvious pleasure but that was all. She did nothing to fight what Catlin was doing to her.

Tamara stumbled backwards in unbelieving terror. Then she turned and fled, too overcome with the unimaginable nightmare of what she’d just witnessed. No, she couldn’t believe what she’d just seen.

She glanced back. Catlin had Brenda in a tight embrace. They looked like lovers, two female lovers making out at a picnic table while the park was growing shadowy as dusk turned to night. Making a sobbing sound Tamara continued her flight from the park.

Back in her apartment Tamara paced. “What should I do? What should I do?” She kept muttering to herself. “Call the police? Call 911?” Then she laughed. What could she say?   Some b***h with fangs was biting her friend’s neck? She laughed, feeling horribly hysterical.

She glanced at the clock on her kitchen wall. It had been an hour since she had fled that awful scene at the park. And she felt terrified. So terrified her whole body was trembling.

What had happened to Brenda? Did that…creature drain her blood? Had it killed her best friend? It was a vampire, Tamara knew, a real f*****g vampire!

Brenda was probably lying in the park in the dark, drained of blood. Dead.

Tamara felt a sob rising up in her when a noise made her freeze, destroying the sob before it got free. The noise came again. Someone was in her apartment!

“Brenda!” She called. It was her friend! She was alive! She was the only person that had a key to her apartment.

She rushed into her living room. Before she actually saw Brenda she felt two icy cold hands grab her. Tamara screamed. It was Catlin!

The vampire smiled coldly into her face, no emotion in her pale eyes what so ever.

    “Hello Tamara.”

Tamara’s horrified gaze focused on the fangs right before the vampire struck, sinking them into her throat. Tamara cried out with the pleasure and pain of it and knew she was soon to join Brenda, where ever that was.

Another tale of a vampire true to form. Not one who is torn by having to feed on humans but one who is cold and goes on the hunt, enjoying the whole thing down to the feeding.
