The Legend Of Moss Man

The Legend Of Moss Man

A Poem by Tina Kline

There’s something there in the woods

I wanted to understand this if I could

Mists of silver and gold drifted around

I heard something come from the ground

What is there I tried so hard to see

Something in the earth is a mystery

The night slowly shifted into view

This magic I suddenly believe is true

The green shimmered beneath the moon

Rising up to intermingle with the gloom

I heard the song that I heard so long ago

I whispered the words and the moss did glow

I heard his voice, so tragic and so torn

Wishing that he was never born

He lost everything that he ever had

Hearing his words I felt darkly sad

The moss took on a very harsh light

Shining forth, so horribly bright

I heard him cry out once more

I felt the pain of his horror

Here in this place in the forest he died

Here he ended his life by suicide

Now the moss here covers his grave

Yet never concealing the choice he made

The moss where he bled to death can’t forget

And his voice cries in the night with no regret

Those he loved he couldn’t live without

He died to be with them there is no doubt

This place in the forest is forever charmed

But it’s a magic of hurt, not one to do harm

The Legend of the Moss Man lives on and on

Of what happens to a life when everything goes wrong

This was a moving piece, legends were born to scare the wickedness from people, or so I was told by my great grandma, but this legend is much more meaningful. I had felt his sadness, pain and regret of doing what he had done. This certainly is a magnificent piece Tina.

An excellent piece. Great imagery. A legend, a myth, a lesson in life... has the feel of all of them. This is one of your best!

This is such a moving piece. Though it is very different in form and cause, it brought up those emotions that I associate with my poem 'A Silent Cry'. The link being that blood calling from the ground and speaking the unexpected.

Very well done, impressive job, describes a situation that very well could be real but sure makes a legend indeed. I enjoyed reading this.
