Happy Holiday

Happy Holiday

A Poem by Tom Higgins
"

A comment on injustice in our "modern" world.

"
Kill a black and don't come back
To work till you've enjoyed
A nice holiday at the expense
Of the department where you're employed.

You couldn't make it up if you tried
To think a young kid has just died
At the hands of a uniformed thug
And the corrupt system gives him a hug

And sends him off to enjoy the sun
While the kid he murdered with his gun
Lies cut up in the mortuary,
Never again will he see

The sunshine of another day,
Especially for a sunshine holiday.
Paid for in a black kid's blood
From this disgrace will come no good.

Unless of course, suddenly
Those in power come to see
That this will never go away
Until there is a fair judgement day

On which the thug who did the deed
In chains in the dock is made to plead
Whether he admits he shot the kid
And faces up to what he did.

But will the jury structure be
In the "land of the free"
Fairly balanced and equal to
The task that they are asked to do?

I am sixty, I live in the English Lake District, and I am married with two daughters. I started to jot down some fleeting thoughts on things that disturb me, and things which I love, when I was fifty .. more..
