Love Hurts

(I) Love hurts,
But emptiness can be worse,
Make your feelings felt,
As nearer rolls the hearse,

(II) Don't hold on to a mystical dream,
Of the perfect one for you,
You have not met him yet,
And possibly never will,

(III) Perfect lives and perfect people,
Belong really in the minds of youth,
How many hours have you wasted,
Wondering who to choose?,

(IV) To choose to flirt with,
To try love or brief romance,
To fall deeply in love with,
Or just one merry dance...?

Author's Note

Romance can develop into love, and sometimes a deep and lasting love. A spark of initial attraction, is needed to start that journey. It may not be for you, to approach relationships this way. Or, if you just want a kind of friendship, with the prospect of some sexy fun with someone; other people should not judge you. But, the "emptiness" of love's absence; can be worst of all options.

People grow to fear experiencing more intense feelings and emotions, good and bad—compassion, empathy, vulnerability, remorse. This is a surefire way to prevent being hurt again. Most people don’t understand about damaged hearts that it is a heavy effort to trust again and that’s where it all begins, with trust. 
Not everyone is meant to be with someone because some people do better alone, but for those that do desire a relationship, there is usually someone for everyone. There is no such thing as a perfect match but there's definitely compatible & completely incompatible.
I think it does not necessarily mean emptiness. Real love arises when there is an abscence of judgement or fear. The less fear there is, the more love there is.

Yes, you have looked at love from different angles and in different ways; unlike some. Indeed, some have too much pride (which can be associated with arrogance or other traits); that they can only consider love through the restricted prism - of their own situation.

Trust me, I have been in that situation. It really hurts yeah. But what's more important is how you are able to withstand the difficulties and the consequences after all the love mess. That apart, it's an excellent poem with a little hint of rhyme scheme and nicely formatted. Nice work, bro!

It's true what you mentioned about the consequences, but that poem was long enough. Dealing with the aftermath or reacting to it, would probably be worthy topics for another poem. So, perhaps your angle has given me "food for thought" (so to speak)?

Of course. This piece is mainly about the absence of love, as suggested by "the emptiness can be worse". I was not seeking to create a new definition of what love means lol. And, the sad empty lives which can follow; when people cling to an idealistic expectation. So, it's also about the hurt which some people live with; living in constant hope for a love - which might never develop for them. Meanwhile, ordinary aspects of their lives; can and so suffer as a consequence. So, you missed the main point. I have written other poems, which cover love itself; as a beautiful experience.

The "hurt" can occur during a love too, for various reasons. I mentioned youthful fantasy too, in regard to the false assumptions whjch we are sometimes encouraged to believe as children. At primary school, my classmates were all encouraged to think that perfect love and perfect world; were just waiting to greet them during adulthood..If it was true, there would be far fewer problems in the world..With my IQ I realised sooner than many, that unrealistic expectations such as I alluded to; can become like a curse. I have learned from experience since those days, that my views were just as correct then; as they are now.

Yes, that's another side to it. Such a topic, which at first seems easy to understand; until we consider it from different sides. Indeed, there is also the different kind of love; which we have for relatives or close friends. Even loving relationships can be stormy at times, of course; but real love can still be there underneath. It's just so different for different people, at the end of the day. Note that I used the word "can", when I mentioned that the emptiness from not being in a loving relationship can be worse; thus implying I'm well aware that this is not always the case. So, in another life; I should have been a lawyer lol.? "Terms & conditions" tend to apply, in many relationships too. Although, they can be boundaries based upon feelings; rather than specific rules.?

There is love and there is attachment ... sometimes they go together and sometimes they do not. There is love that is an attraction ... not just physical ... but magnetic ... there is love that comes from familiarity. There is love a parent feels for a child ... there is conditional love and unconditional. A very nuanced subject and not one easily defined or limited:)
