The actuator is attached to a stem that travels upwards to open and downwards to close the valve. When the hole in the ball is parallel to the flow, it opens, and when the valve handle is turned 90 degrees, it closes. The handle is flat in line with the flow when the valve is open, and perpendicular to it when it is closed. Ball valves are durable and dependable.
