Vegetable

Vegetable

A Poem by VelvetPotato

Not a color, a fruit nor tree -
I whispered tenderly,
In your heart to hearts,
Which vegetable would you be?

Are you a potato, round and plump,
Celery, slim and cut?
An orange carrot to make rabbits jump,
Crunchy kale to stimulate the gut?

He did not answer me,
Stared blankly without a peep,
But his mother said softly,
He used to like green beans.

So I washed him in hot water
With love and suds and soap,
Then used that buttery lotion,
To soothe his scaley coat

Inspected his heels and elbows,
Protected pressure places on pillows,
And applied those brown, foam dressings,
The almonds to my skinny string bean

Lastly, for some extra flavor
Is that warm blanket of cheese
I draped it over his broken body,
In hopes he'll have some peace

I think he was broccoli ...maybe she was chopping it...
buttering him up for love.
And he may be green at it, but she will help him grow...
and he will present her with beautiful florets...to win her heart.

Magical and lyrical. A joy to read and left a smile on my face. When poetry elicits emotion it has accomplished its job. Wonderful writing. P.S...velvet potato is such a cute and memorable moniker, and represents poetry just perfect. Thank you for sharing your words.
