Waiting for the Miracle

I would give you all I have:
I would give you this winter day
that chokes against the spring,

the light falling snow, the grey.
We looked out the window and praised
the blessed sky for giving in at last.

Con la fe, hasta la agua cura,” he said
and then we laughed and changed the dicho:
“With faith, even laughter heals!”

Last night out in the day-boned yard
and dry-boned street and the
dry-boned sky, we held up our

hands imagining snow.
We woke to wind tapping
against the glass on white branches,

the miracle we took for granted
not so long ago. I would give
you the sky with its imponderable blue

warming to daffodils and green.
I would make a bouquet
from all the songs my blood can sing:

yearning and desire and fascination
and flight to present to you
tied with a ribbon of moonlight.

I would give you the dust of a New Mexican street
to wipe off on the seat of your jeans
and sunset flames to hunker down by,

a stray coyote crossing the road
oblivious of traffic and what shuffles
under his feet is not pebbles and dirt.

I would give you time to lay your head
against my heart and think of nothing
but rain and birds calling

to announce their hatchling young:
I would shelter you and feed you on
honeysuckles and apricots.

I would give all that I have:
the lazy caress of river meandering
between mossy banks, the squeeze of sand

between my toes, the rush over ancient rocks.
I would let you swim there in the tadpole lanes,
I would find a way to bring you home.
