I ambled down the cobbled streets,

Beneath the painted autumn leaves

And marveled at what I beheld;

At sights I could scarcely believe.


And yet, these sights and wonders paled

And seemed to me so ordinary.

For none of what I sought compared-

No statue, bust or reliquary


Could inspire my admiration

Ever more than you, I say:

That in the heart of our great nation,

You are what took my breath away.
