Can I Keep You

Can I Keep You

A Poem by

As soon as you leave me alone

The tears start to fall

Sometimes I wonder why I bother

To hold it in at all

But I know I do it for you

So you can think I’m strong

When really I’m drowning in loneliness

The quiet that’s not silent all along

Time passes

And it’s really all the same

What’s the deal with this life?

Why make us play this game?

I love you.

And it’s enough to make me smile

To keep the tears at bay, a little longer

Just for a while

And I know I’ll see you tomorrow

But I wish you were here now

I want to be in your arms

I don’t really care how

I want your soft embrace

And your gentle touch

I love you

And I know that much

So here it comes

The biggest night of your life

Graduation

Are you ready to leave high school behind?

You told me today

That you would’ve stayed if I’d wanted

Flunked out of your senior year

But you have no idea how badly I’d be haunted

You need to move on to bigger and better things

Get out of this hick high school that we suffer through

But don’t worry, this doesn’t mean

That I don’t love you

On the contrary, I love you so much

There’s something about you that makes me feel alive

I love being around you

I wish you were with me tonight

As you move on…

Remember me, and keep me too

Because one thing I’ll always ask darling

Is Can I Keep You?
