~ The Amulet of Calcite

It was like I lived anew, in a second world

On that day I found back this special orange colored

Amulet made of calcite,  designed with small

French lilies in this silverware formed necklace…

It was exactly the same, as when I saw it for the last time

The world of history ever  spoke to me I remembered

When  I was a child,  I found it before,

It gave me flashbacks, of something still vivid in mind.

It was pure magic, once I wore it, it let me fly

I did lost it for years, not knowing grandmother

Had hidden it in this old antique  wooden “Japara” box

But now I found it back again… so I lay down on my bed,

I closed my eyes, and followed the world of memories

I saw my past life,  moving in fragments,  on Java Island

Flashes  of old photos and faces,  sunsets, and people

Who walked on sandy roads, with old bicycles in their hand

Large green tropical rice fields, around them…

Many white clothes people wore,

Palms, and papaya trees, and a sepia gleaming hue

Of these fragments, so vividly in mind...

The amulet had something to tell me, I was sure of it

Then I woke up, grandmother took it from my neck…

She said, it was dangerous to wear it,

I couldn’t no more enjoy my roots…

It was taken from me, she found it long ago

On a sea wreck, once made by the Europeans,

It had brought them to Europe finally,

She never spoke a word about it, it was such a taboo

I saw it was painful for her, to see me have it around my neck,

But with a half blood the spell maybe worked?

At least that I found out, I was there, I escaped, into my past…

Nobody would ever explain me a thing about it,

I never found it back again…  I wonder though,

Maybe it carried many hidden secrets with it,

Grandmother had kept it somewhere safe right now,

I could not do anything else then accept the fact,

I lost it all… I wonder if I will find it back once more…

So I can complete what I always have been missed…

So the amulet does have much to say, and speaks according to who wears it and what they need to know. For your grandmother it spoke of painful things that she did not want to know, but perhaps it was what she needed to know. And for you, it spoke of a place where you had been before and needed to remember. Still, the memories are in you, but little things like an amulet can be reminders. And many other things can be reminders too; so many of those other things you have already written about... so many more you will discover. Thanks for sharing a delightful memory!

Pyschometry in poetry both personal and historical. A wonderful idea, so skillfully wrought. With the warmth and evocative richness coming to the reader throughout.
In reading your work Elisa there is a displaced time element that is always very evident.

welcome!
Funny how these family heirlooms, and Jewelry give off that special power. I can think of a hundred books I've read where these types of objects are at the center of the story. I think it's about the connection, the history of the object. A direct lineage to your Grandmother... A poem full of symbolism that has given me a few things to think about. Maybe even birthed an idea. Thank you Miss Elli for opening a door.

oh a historical look into your roots... its like an heir loom passed down... but in this case it has some deep history of sadness to your grandmother... sad that you lost it the second time and never found again... maybe its coincidence or was meant to be to be lost again and again... for it might brings bad luck or good luck, either way... its a good memory of you... and holds a special memory of life has passed specifically the happy ones...i know some secrets are not meant to open just for the good of anyone's sake... still we will never know... life is full of wonders... its either we let it slide or we go with it,... wonderful work dearest friend..enjoyed this!

This had the excitement of an Indiana Jones adventure and the wisdom of an old sacred parchment... The best of both worlds... "I lost it all… I wonder if I will find it back once more… / So I can complete what I always have been missed…" Those last two lines are so touching, they filled me with raw emotions... So beautiful. Thank you for sharing your words with us... 100/100

This, my dear, is epic...it's your own personal mythology :) I did a quick search on Calcite and it seems to have been quite a popular material in ancient(?) Egypt for crafting amulets and talismans and those sorts of things...then I looked up Japara and wondered if there was some measure of irony in this story, being a durable material that can withstand a lot of nautical punishment...I am totally intrigued by this piece...it seems to take on the life of the amulet itself with its mysteries and secrets...what can I say, this one blew my mind...I could stay up all night pondering over this one ;)
